Ok, this is pretty much a mess. I hope I'm overlooking something... I have just 5 tracks of MIDI currently in a project. There are around 30 MIDI items in these tracks. There is no audio yet. Each track contains a number of different MIDI items and loops. I frequently begin compositions in MIDI and in the early stages it's not uncommon for me to change the entire project tempo slightly to get that perfect feel. In Sonar it's a snap...change project tempo and all the MIDI clips and loops adjust in length and reposition themselves according to the new tempo. Well, I've been at this approaching 2 hours now and trying to do the same thing in Reaper leads to chaos. While notes appear to realign, the length of loops don't adjust or reposition correctly and I have to try and manually drag every MIDI item in the project to get them to line up correctly with the new tempo. This is a major frustration. One workaround I did find is to glue all MIDI items in all tracks making sure to add items at the beginning of each track so all tracks start at 0. This way all the notes in the MIDI items adjust to the new tempo and there is no need to adjust starting positions since all start at 0. Now this works but it's not exactly workflow friendly...particularly when you're in a high composition phase. Am I missing something here? Or is this just a MIDI feature missing in Reaper at this point? Best regards, DB
Your timebase is probably set to "time" in the project settings, set it to "beat" and it will behave like you are used to. Oh, and save as default so all your new projects behave like this.
2. Is correct. I had the same problem and it was driving me mad. You can set the whole project, or individual tracks. When would you want to use a timebase? Maybe Reaper should have beats at default instead of time?
Maybe it makes sense to have new MIDI items get timebase beats (position, length), with a user preference to have them get the project default timebase (ie. the existing behavior) instead.

Thanks...had a feeling it was something I overlooked. I'm all for the idea of new MIDI items getting the timebase Beats(position, rate, length). This would probably save considerable user frustration. Best regards, DB
"The problem with Beats(position, rate, length) is that it will mess up your audio, so is useless if you're trying to map tempo to a pre-recorded audio file." Yeah, I was vaguely thinking that when i typed it. I had an acapella, no idea what the tempo was, and I didnt want it messed with, so I think I turned off 'preserve pitch' and had it linked to time. Then i messed with the speed to synch it. Think thats what I did. Does that sound right? Fortunately the acapella Im on at the moment is a nice simple BPM and starts bang on the beat! So I have that set to beats.
