Hi, The first thing you need to do is get the codes read to determine where the fault lies. It isn't necessarily the lambda/oxygen sensor that is at fault. The warning light does not make the car dangerous to drive, so you can calm down a little.. :) Des. . . ;)

I'll lift the bonnet tomorrow and run through the codes as per Haynes. Hopefully i'll find something that i can report on. Does the DIY Diagnostic box cover all the known Lambda faults? Larwood.

As promised, lifted the bonnet positioned myself above the diagnostic box, Haynes on top of the radiator, and this is where i drift off into one of those staring into the flames moments, just looking at the engine and not doing anything at all. It was while i was thinking , what a beautiful piece of engineering when i noticed a thin pipe hanging under the inlet manifold and at the same time, thought that i had rather a lot of oil under there and also on the bell housing. Further investigation led me to the flame trap and the 1/2" bore pipe just resting on the top. This pipe is connected to further pipes and a plastic cranked piece of pipe with what can only be described as a small 1/8" bore spur that fitted my hanging pipe perfectly. I replaced all dislodged pipes cursing the MOT guys and thinking "fixed" at the same time, at the same time i did the codes and came up with 1-1-3 and 1-2-1, looking in the manual it pointed towards mixture issues and i thought that would be about right with all the pipework hanging off. Sat in the drivers seat, started her up and the lambda light went out, i'd just got to the YE of YES when i heard a pop come bang and the lambda light came back on. I went and had a look and then much to my sudden drop to the depths of depression, was the pipework hanging inthe breeze. Only one explanation for this i thought, crankcase pressure, serious ring blowby, or something along those lines. And then it clicked, crank pressure wouldn't really be noticeable because this baby has what i term as "closed circiut breathing", there's probably a more tech name in the manual for it somewhere, the pipes would have to be blocked to allow the crank pressure to blow them off. I pulled them all off and couldn't believe what i saw, the cranked plastic elbow in particular, absolutely blocked solid with baked black carbon residue, i cleaned everything out, promising myself to get a new pipe refit throughout from the Turbo to the inlet manifold and all the smallbore pipes there as well. well i put everything back together, and now she runs like the proverbial watch. Larwood. p:s had a look on ebay for a set of said pipes, couldn't see any for a Volvo, but loads of sets for various other makes of vehicle, but what i could see was enough for me, silicone pipework is really expensive. Oh Apologies all round to the MOT guys i think. They didn't stick that black crud in the pipes, "OR"?
